Because my companion was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had arranged a two-week stay there before heading to London. We got to the student accommodation, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, sat down, and began chatting with fellow residents. Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been working on studies using an electron microscope. He pointed out that there was an research lab at the university – right next door to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa. The next day I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The man from Iraq walked over to me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I went to the meeting – but right away explained to my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time. As is common in NYC – a place where everything seems achievable – she declared: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London. I worked there for three years. A perk of the job was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a master’s of international affairs. I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his identity, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in numerous aspects. I lacked the bravery or self-assurance to contact anyone at an elite institution and request employment. Additionally, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit. What's more, that gig at Columbia led me to a job in Zurich where I got to know my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative. Tell us about the Kindest Gesture a Unknown Person Has Once Performed for You?
